Retiring a TiVo HD - Quick question

$

My new Roamio Plus will be here tomorrow, so my TiVO HD will be retired or relegated to some other use/space.

During setup I'm going to pull the CableCard from the HD and put it in the Roamio. My wife still has tons of shows on the HD. Can I hook up the HD to the TV via component video (and stereo audio - no receiver/amplifier involved) so she can watch/delete old shows on the HD? I'm thinking there's going to issues playing back 'protected' content without an HDCP signal? The only 2 HDMI inputs to the TV will be for the Roamio and my HTPC.

I'll keep the HD connected to my network, so I know I can transfer the old shows to the new box (right?) but it would be simpler for me to just let her switch TV inputs and watch/delete the old shows from the old HD.

Thanks! Sure looking forward to this upgrade!

I unplugged my series 3 with a lifetime subscription plugged it back in and it's dead. I've tried three different outlets in the house. It's the Tivo! Now what? I'm really bummed.

Recognizing external drive after internal disk upgrade

The internal disk died and I replaced it with a unit I found on Ebay. The new drive came pre-formatted for my Tivo series 3 HD. I left my WD external drive unplugged, installed the new internal drive and went through the setup without a hitch. Next I plugged the external drive and Tivo detected it but it said that it needed to be setup which I authorized with the three thumbs down. The Tivo rebooted but the external drive is still coming up as if it has just been detected and Tivo is asking me to go through the process of adding it again. I tried this a few times with the same results :-(

I saw instructions on this site stating that I need to remove the internal drive, attach it to a PC and run some program to "enable" (I'm guessing) adding an external drive. Unfortunately I don't have a PC so before I find one and go through all that, I want to make sure this will indeed take care of my issue. Maybe I have a different problem. Thanks.

Value of Series 3 w/Lifetime in Boot Loop

hey guys,

I've never had a Tivo problem in over 15 years of being a customer, but out main Series 3 just got the green screen and has been stuck in a boot loop bummer.

I realize that a hard drive is probably all it needs, but I may go Roamio.

What is a "boot looped" series 3 with Lifetime worth vs one that is repaired? Just curious on your take and whether its worth it to repair it first before selling.

All opinions welcomed. Thanks!

Series 3 in Boot Loop - Bad Drive?

Hey there,

I've been a Tivo owner blissfully using these things for 15 or so years without a hiccup. Our downstairs series 3 got a green screen, then went into a boot loop.

I discovered the kickstart commands and have been running 54. It passed the smart test, so i went straight to the overnight/long one and got the error below.

I assume this is conclusive proof that its the hard drive, but can anyone confirm 100%? If the color is off, its due to the hdmi cable being partially seated -- it sometimes does that when i pull the thing in and out of the cabinet.

Thanks!

Gang -

Wanted to share a recent experience I had with my TiVo HD (Series 3). I'm on TWC and have a Tuning Adapter. Last night I got a message that my subscription was not active. I've got a Lifetime Subscription so something was wrong. TiVo support asked me to check my Account & System Information. Line 7 of System Information (TiVo Service Level) read: A:- It should be C: xxxxxx (where the x's appear to be a date.

Shows that had not recorded had a reason that they required TiVo Plus Service. It said go to TiVo Central and choose "How to upgrade to TiVo Plus service." There was nothing at TiVo Central about this.

Support wanted me to manually do a Service Connection - TWICE, then reboot.

The first service connection was stuck on: Loading Info (Preparing to Load) for over 3 hours but miraculously completed. The 2nd one went very quickly. Then I rebooted. At this point I was able to once again record and the Service Level field said C; 101015 (or something similar). I no longer had messages about not having an active subscription.

The only thing that wasn't right was that all my Season Passes in the To Do List said: None Scheduled. It was late so I went to bed. But TiVo kept working while I was asleep and by morning everything was back to normal and all the Season Pass shows had been set up.

Happy ending - for now anyhow.

A bad luck story that turned out great...

Last week we had a bad storm pass over, we lost power for 4 hours but the bad part was the power started surging. It took out my UPS and zapped one of hard drives in my TiVo. It was a 2tb WD AVGP that was 3 weeks out of warranty so I hit eBay and found a person selling 2 2tb WD AVGP drives for 40 bucks each. I grabbed one up and it got here today in a factory static bag. I removed it from the static bag hooked it up to my PC and ran"Hard Disk Sentinel" with will give you the hours the drive has run so far and how much life is left any errors the smart map etc... I was shocked to see the drive only had 4 hours of running time with no errors a perfect drive. I fixed my UPS for under 5 bucks so 50 dollars for a new 2tb HDD and a working UPS... I think I might go buy a mega millions ticket today.

Is my tivo dead?

So it would seem that I have troubles. My tivo doesn't do much these days. But it does do some things. Here's what it does do:
  • Hard drive spins up
  • Seems like I'm getting the right voltages from the power supply (which I did try replacing already, though the new one could be bad too)
  • Backlight comes on behind the directional buttons

Here's what it doesn't do:
  • There is nothing displayed at all on the front lcd
  • There is no video output
  • The pins powering the fan are not keeping a steady voltage, it's oscillating between 12V and 0V fairly quickly.

Please tell me that I bought a defective power supply and can return it. Otherwise, this will be expensive.

Should I really get lifetime for $99 on TivoHD

I just got a new Roamio Plus to replace my old Tivo HD that had monthly service. I'm ready to call to cancel service on my old HD. I know that sometimes when calling to cancel, Tivo will offer lifetime for $99.

I have no use for the HD myself at this point, but I keep seeing other posts on this forum about Tivos selling well on eBay with lifetime service.

BUT, I just looked at recently closed sales on eBay of Tivo HDs with lifetime, and even upgraded hard drives, and they are only selling for about $150.

Can I get $50 for a Tivo HD without lifetime on HD? (And I've upgraded the hard drive in mine to 1 TB.)

Just seems silly to pay $100, to just make only $50 in the end, if I can just get $50 without paying the $100 first.

Series 3 seen by Premiere but unable to transfer shows

I have a Series 3 HD (TCD652160 upgraded to 1TB) that works fine, is visible in my tivo.com account, etc. Last week, I ran across a need to use its tuners to record some stuff and would now like to transfer those 4 shows to my 'main' Premiere (TCD746320 upgraded to 2TB).

The Premiere shows the Series 3 as connected when I scroll to the bottom of My Shows but, when I try to view the HD's recordings to move them, I only get a message that there is a network problem. According to my tivo.com account, both boxes have sharing enabled.

This is the first time I've tried to do anything with the Series 3 besides record so I don't know if I have a major issue or if it's something simple. My searches here showed that there are occasional shows that won't transfer HD > Premiere, but I didn't find a thread about a Series 3 being visible on the network but its shows being inaccessible. Any ideas where I start?

S3 reboots when inserting cable cards

One of my S3 units (it's a TCD648250B) had to be rebooted recently and was subsequently stuck in the "Welcome! Powering up" loop. Since the same thing happened about a year ago to my other S3 and a new 2TB hard drive fixed the problem, I ordered the same exact type of replacement drive for this one. Unfortunately, the unit was still stuck in the "Welcome..." loop.

I unplugged everything but the power cord from the back of the unit and it booted up past the "Welcome..." Screen; however, the unit immediately rebooted as soon as I installed one of the cable cards and again got stuck in the "Welcome..." loop. There were also flickering lines on the screen when the TiVo booted up.

Am I most likely correct in assuming that this is a power supply issue and, if so, is Weaknees still the recommended place to order a replacement power supply?

TCD652160 Rebooting, cant get to kickstart

Had a HD unit, would reboot random. Changed the HD, and Power Supply.. still rebooted, I gave up and got another.

This one had been working OK for a while, but tonight it rebooted.. Now it is in a loop.

It actually comes on, completes the boot, and I bring up the guide. When I choose a live program, it plays for 1 second, then reboots.

Holding PAUSE why rebooting (power cycle) will not get me in to kickstart.

Is there some trick on the TCD652160 to get to kickstart? I'd like to test the drive.

I have another drive here I put in, but can't do much with it unless I re-register the cable card...

TCD658000 Drive has died looking for method and image to restore

Tivo Series 3 HDTV XL Model TCD658000 has a died drive which is about seven years old.

Drive will not spin up either connected to Tivo MB or externally to a spare system or a external cloning adaptor. New drive when connected to TIVO MB/SATA connecter spins right up.

Have a spare 5400 WD drive with 2TB capacity "green version" I assume would be a suitable replacement.

Looks like there are a number of options to upgrade in capacity from a working drive, but in my case the original drive is dead. Are images available and where might I find a image for TCD 65800 and what method can I use to install that image onto a new drive?

Have Windows or Linux boxes (Ubuntu or OpenSuse) looked around and seems like the tools like mfslive and mfstools are not quickly available.

TCD652160 Cannot Activate

I bought a TCD562160 from a guy, with lifetime subscription. I tried to activate it online and got this message, "The box you are trying to activate is no longer supported. Please visit tivo.com today to shop for TiVo's latest products." I have it hooked up and it seems to be working. Any suggestions? Leave it and just go with it? What can happen or what are my limitations with not activating it? I am worried about calling TIVO and having them stop my lifetime subscription.

Thanks.

Tivo Online - no support for series 3?

Looks like Tivo has eliminated all the online options for series 3 - can no longer connect to schedule recordings, etc. Also looks like they've eliminated the Find TV shows page, which was really useful. Is there another way around this? Thanks!

Stuck on Version 8.01

My HD died in my Series 3 Tivo (OLED). It is the 3rd drive...yes the unit is that old. I restored the original image with WINMFS and the unit booted fine..went right into the guided setup. It connects and downloads the guide information...my Account Info is correct, etc. I don't have the option for the Media Access Key and am stuck on v8.01. I thought the software upgrade would get pulled down.

I tried the things on this forum....unclicked the Device Preferences on Tivo Central...reconnected....waited an hour...reclicked the preferences and reconnected. Still no update or Media Key.

I chatted with Tivo support this evening and was informed that by opening my unit they were unable to provide me with any support. I installed a Modified Drive...When I told them I could put back in the Original drive...they said, no support because I opened the unit...LOL.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
